We are often asked if a ground sheet is necessary for tent. Then, today I will explain “The role of the ground sheet”.

 

What is ground sheet?

 

Ground sheet is like a large leisure sheet made of strong and unbreakable material laid between the tent and the ground (under the tent).

 

The ground sheet is laid under the tent and does not have cushioning properties.

Be careful not to make mistake as cushioning “tent mat” laid in a tent.

 

Role of ground sheet

 

Ground sheet has three major roles.

① Prevent scratching and damage on the bottom of the tent
② prevent the bottom of the tent from getting dirty, wet and humid
③ Insulate

There are various places to set a tent. Sometimes you may set up in places like river beds, rocky places, or where have lots of tree roots.

 

If you set a tent in such a place, there are times when you damage a tent or open a hole.

 

There is a possibility that water may stain from there if a hole is opened in the bottom of the tent.

Then laying a ground sheet under the tent prevents scratches and damage on the bottom of the tent.

If you set up a tent on the ground rainy mud, sludge, sand, etc., the bottom of the tent becomes very dirty.

Then, you need to remove tent while worrying about the bottom of the muddy’s tent and it will be hesitant to put into a stuff bag because dirt of the bottom sticks to the walls and the roof part when folded.

 

Also, you will have to wash and clean the bottom of the tent after you take it back and it is very hard with a big tent.

That is why laying a ground sheet under tent is good.

If you lay a ground sheet under the tent, it will be easier to remove and clean later because only the ground sheet gets dirty.

Furthermore even if it is not raining, it protects the wetting of the tent from the moisture of the ground.

You can get a little thermal insulation effect by laying a ground sheet under the tent even if the ground is hot or cold.

 

 

Size of ground sheet

 

For the ground sheet, the slightly smaller size than the tent or the same size as the tent is recommended at the maximum.

 

If the ground sheet is larger than the tent, water will accumulate on the ground sheet when it rains, and the tent will be flood and drain around the tent will worsen.

 

If the ground sheet is larger than the tent, I think it is good to weave the protruding part under the tent when it starts to rain.
